On the first morning of the Six Day War, as Israeli jets began wreaking havoc over Egypt, Hosni Mubarak was out on a practice flight. As the commander of an airfield in Beni Suef, he had taken off early on 5 June 1967 with a few other pilots. They were in the air when they received news that the war had broken out.
